Mermaid

The "Mermaid" video and the song itself have meant different things to different people. For me, it represents part of my struggle with depression. I say "part of" because everyone's journey has layers, and mine has been no exception. 

The "Mermaid" video features two characters: Ivy and Ivory. Ivy is the human, Ivory is the mermaid. Both characters are chained to a stool physically and to each other metaphorically. Ivy has suppressed her negative emotions for so long that the negativity manifested itself into a sentient being that took form as a blue mermaid, Ivory. Ivory feels nothing but the negativity she was born out of. She has no idea where she is, why she is there, or how to get out of her chains. Ivory tries to fight her chains whereas Ivy has given up trying to get out of them. Ivy takes off her chain at the end of the video after Ivory destroys herself as Ivy begins to hide her sadness and agony less and her mask begins to fade. I wanted to portray how much keeping things in can rip a person apart. 

The song is about struggling to live up to an expectation created by people around you who view you as an invincible, etherial character because they can't see what's going on in your head. They only see the face you put on when you're outside the safety of your home. You find yourself caught in the middle of a battle between the different voices and emotions in your head as you try and figure out how to act; overthinking everything to the point where you end up shutting and breaking down. I wrote "Mermaid" at the end of July in 2017, and it's one of my favourites to play live. I try to turn my negative emotions into something healing and beautiful, hoping the song has and will help people heal and/ or understand whatever they may be going through. 

The song and the video give the same message but also a different one entirely. There are multiple sides to everything. Humans are complex beings which a multitude of emotions and I wanted to create a piece conveying as much as I could without overloading it.
